Training
The Rowing Club train on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10am throughout the year. During the Spring, Summer and Autumn there are also water sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. There is also a weights room within school which is used for on-land training such as ergos, weights and circuits.
During the Winter we attend local Heads and in Spring/Summer we go to many local regattas. We also go to National Schools Regatta in May and National Championships in July.
About The Club
The Rowing Club has consistently been one of the school’s most successful sporting clubs and has been established for over 25 years. During this time we have achieved huge success at both National and International levels. In the recent past the club has produced 13 International athletes, the most notable being the Wells brothers. The older of the two, Matthew, was the Great Britain single sculler at the Olympics in Sydney and both Matt and Pete competed in the Athens Olympics. Matt recently won a gold medal in a World Cup event which raises hopes of a medal in the 2008 Olympics where he is competing in the men's double scull event.
During his time at QEHS Matt was World Junior Champion in the double sculls and European Junior Champion in a single. Not long after he left he became Under 23 World Champion in a single scull. Younger brother Peter came 4th at the World Junior Championships in a double and then followed in his brother’s footsteps by obtaining the Under 23 gold medal.
QE student and rower Chris Jacklin, who left for university in 2006, has been selected for the GB team and has won medals at the 2006 Coupe de la Jeunesse, another international event in Holland, and Ghent Regatta.
Training sessions on the water are held several nights a week, and also during the school holidays. The club competes mainly at local events such as Durham, York and Hexham Regatta where QE won the Victor Ludorum trophy in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
We also compete in National Schools and Championships, which are usually held at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham. The club also has a strong presence in representing the North at Junior Inter-Regional Championships.
New members are always welcome and if you'd like to get involved, please contact Mrs Higgins direct at school, or use the Contact Us form on this site.
